Autumn has only just begun, but now is a good time to get into gear for winter. Whether you plan to hit the slopes or just want to prepare for winter driving conditions, it’s not too early to start. Here are a few tips to ready your Subaru for the challenge of snow, sleet and ice. An unforgettable winter adventure awaits!

Take your Subaru on a winter road trip for an awe-inspiring adventure.

Plan your trip

Fresh snow, beautiful scenery and Subaru… what could be more memorable than a winter wonderland adventure? If the slopes are calling your name, take a road trip to ski central and the winter sports resorts. For a unique experience, venture northward to marvel at the Aurora Borealis and stay at an ice hotel. Or take a driving tour of winter festivals, Christmas markets and historic villages. If you're driving across Europe in winter, expect snow-covered or icy roads more challenging than you’re used to. But winter driving is about more than just plowing through the white stuff.

Although Subaru has a winter-warrior reputation, it pays to plan ahead and take some extra precautions before you go.

Winterise your car

So you’re ready for snow… make sure your Subaru is also in peak condition for winter. A well-charged battery is essential, as cold weather lowers battery life. Fill up with fuel before heading out, and keep the tank at least half full to prevent the fuel from freezing. In most winter resort areas, anti-freeze is included in fuel at the pump. Top up oil, coolant and windshield washer fluid levels. Your wiper blades should be in good working order; but use an ice scraper or de-icer to clear thicker ice from the windshield. Make sure indicators and lights are working properly and cleared. Check the brakes and tire condition before any long trip.

Car safety check

Snow chains should be fitted when road signs indicate or when roads are covered in snow or ice.

Check into tires and chains

Even though Subaru is a snow champion, it’s a good idea to fit winter tires if you’re planning a trip during the winter months. They provide even better grip, handling and braking in colder temperatures and on slick roads. For many European countries, winter tires are mandatory. Some countries also require carrying a set of snow chains in the boot when travelling in mountainous regions, a must for your ski holiday. If you’re not sure how to use snow chains, practice fitting them in advance.

Keep in mind that the chains must be removed when the road is cleared, as they could damage the road surface and your vehicle.

Each country has different requirements for winter tires and snow chains, and rules can differ for residents and visitors. Check out the exact regulations for each country you plan to visit with this interactive list by the European Commission or with the winter tire overview from EEC-Net.

Many European countries require the following to be carried at all times: reflective vest, reflective warning signs (triangle) and a first aid kit.

Carry a kit

Be prepared for emergencies and weather delays, and carry a car safety kit in your vehicle. That includes a fully charged mobile phone (with phone number of local roadside assistance), a blanket, water and some food. Keep a warm jacket, gloves and boots with you in case you need to get out of your vehicle. But if you get stranded, stay with your vehicle for safety and warmth.

These items might also come in handy: torch and spare batteries, de-icer, spare screenwash, tow rope, jump-start cables and a road map.

Stay updated with the weather, traffic and road status, before and during the trip.

Know before you go

Before you hit the road, check the weather conditions along your route. And stay updated with local weather and traffic news as you go. If heavy rain or snow is forecast, consider taking an alternative route or postponing your trip. Avoid any roads that could become dangerous during bad weather. Try to travel during daylight and let someone know your route and planned arrival time.

Take it slow

Subaru’s are outfitted with smart car safety features to remain surefooted in bad weather, but it’s important to always drive according to road conditions. Accelerating, stopping and turning all take longer in freezing weather and on snow-covered roads, so adjust your speed to conditions. Keep a safe distance (up to ten seconds in severe weather) between vehicles in case of sudden stops. Be aware of possible icy patches on bridges and open areas, even when the rest of the road has thawed. It’s a good idea to allow extra travel time in case of delays or poor weather.

Get comfortable

The Subaru cockpit is designed to keep you comfortable and safe for the long haul. It helps to wear comfortable footwear and clothing that doesn’t restrict your movement while driving. Remember your sunglasses to reduce the glare of snow on your windshield and low winter sun. Stay alert and avoid driving while you’re fatigued.
