In September 2010, Fuji Heavy Industries announced that the latest developments in their technological and engineering know-how were to be brought to bear on a new generation of the BOXER engine, trusted and used daily by hundreds of thousands of drivers worldwide.
The result of this announcement was the unveiling of the third-generation BOXER – the Horizontally-Opposed 4-cylinder gasoline engine, which represents the first time that the engine has been completely redeveloped in 21 years.
This new engine is set to be used in the Forester but will be included in more vehicles in the future. The overhaul builds on the developing demands of the modern driver – including increased environmental efficiency and the ability for adaptation.
However, it also retains the core elements of the BOXER technology which Subaru drivers have come to rely on.

Safety and stability
One of the key features of the BOXER is the excellent degree of control that it offers to drivers – the knowledge that the vehicle will remain in control on challenging surfaces and terrains. The position of the engine in the vehicles – a key factor in BOXER’s performance – is also a contributory factor to safety.
Top performance
The engine has contributed – and continues to contribute – to the performance of sports cars and competitive driving around the world. Standard-setting performances in rallies and at the Nurburgring have been made possible due to the unique performance of the Boxer and its ability to handle all types of terrain and surface.
Confidence in motion
Alongside this, the engine features a compact and lightweight build and superior vibration balance. These elements combine to give an engine which is increasingly perfect for urban use as well as being able to meet the demands of today’s more adventurous drivers.
